My Role and Partners

Served as Interaction Designer embedded within Imaginary Forces, the design and production studio engaged to re-envision the new tournament website, working under the direction of Imaginary Forces' Creative Director and Producers.

Context & Constraints

  • Strict NDA before launch. Client and tournament identity withheld; original publication used a generic project title rather than naming the event.
  • Site needed seven primary features ready for a fixed, high-visibility tournament-week launch (2011)
  • Creative direction called for embedded "beauty sequence" course videos at launch and between features

Approach

  • Conceptualized UX Strategy documents translating Imaginary Forces' creative pitch into structure the production team could design and build against for the web.
  • Conducted high-level experience diagramming across the seven primary features, mapping required user types and supporting resources
  • Partnered with Imaginary Forces' Creative Director and Producers to keep UX Strategy documentation aligned with agreed creative direction
  • Delivered an Experience Matrix guiding the production team's animation and rendering decisions feature by feature

    Overview

In 2010, Tana served as a Interaction Designer on the website for the Masters 2011 tournament, working under the guidance of a Creative Director and Producers at Imaginary Forces, the award-winning linear broadcast media design and production studio engaged to build the site. The project required translating a creative pitch (including embedded "beauty sequence" video of the course at launch and between features) into Experience Strategy documentation the production team could execute against ahead of a fixed, high-visibility tournament-week deadline. Scope centered on seven primary site features, each requiring its own user types and supporting resources to function. Tana's individual-contributor role sat squarely in IA and experience strategy: producing concept documents, an Experience Matrix, and a high-level experience diagram, while Imaginary Forces' creative and production teams owned visual design, animation, and build.

Concept documentation was delivered in early 2010; the site went live for the April 2011 tournament.

    Strategy

    North Star & principles

    1. Let cinematics set tone without blocking tasks. Course beauty sequences open the experience and transition between features, but never trap the user.
    2. Sequence features so users always know where they are going next.
    3. Give production a single source of truth for the envisioned expression of animation, rendering, and editorial timing.

    Design and Solution

Tana's core deliverable was a high-level experience diagram mapping the site's seven primary features against the user types each one served and the resources required to support it, giving the production team a single reference for how the pieces of the site related to one another.

To carry that structure into execution, she prepared an Experience Matrix translating the agreed pitch and creative direction into specific guidance for animating and rendering each feature, keeping production decisions aligned with what the Creative Directors and Producer at Imaginary Forces had approved.

The creative direction called for "beauty sequences" — video footage of the course — at site launch and woven between feature transitions, consistent with Imaginary Forces' background in motion design. Tana's UX documentation accounted for where that footage needed to integrate without disrupting the seven-feature structure.

    Delivery

    • Worked within Imaginary Forces' production pipeline; handed the Experience Matrix and experience diagram to the Art Director and UI team as the single source of truth for animation, rendering, and editorial timing.
    • Maintained alignment with the creative brief's cinematic scope while keeping the seven-feature structure legible and buildable under a fixed, tournament-week deadline.
    • The final build of the 2011 Masters tournament website produced by the Art Director and his UI design team is shown for context for my Information Architecture concept documents.

    Outcomes

Four of the seven planned features launched live for the 2011 Masters tournament. The leader board, video highlights reel, history timeline, and course experience sections (four of the six features visible in the IA documentation) went live on schedule, confirming that the Experience Matrix translated cleanly from concept documents into a shippable production build.
